Pros and Cons of Working Remotely

As a self employed bookkeeper, I have the ability to either work from my home office or travel to my clients premises and work from there. Both have lots of Pros and Cons. I have focused on remote working for this article - as the Pros here are the Cons for On-Site working (just the other way round), and the Con's here are easier to deal with from the clients office.

Remote Working - Pro

  • Saving time - when you don't have to "dress to impress" in the morning or even make the morning commute, this saves more time than you probably realise! This hour or so of saved time can be re-directed into something more professional.

  • Decreased interruptions - I would say no interruptions at all but we know that is not very realistic! So decreased interruptions, as in you can get away from "overhead conversations" and the ringing phones of office life so that you can concentrate more on the task in hand.

  • Work/Family balance - allowing Mum's and Dad's to do the school runs and work from their home office. The time spent doing this can easily be caught up at other times and colleagues can easily work around this. It also allows people to work at their peak, for example if they are a morning person or a night owl. After all not everyone is efficient on the same schedule.

Remote Working - Con

  • Lack of brainstorming and feedback - especially if most of your work is done remotely.

  • Technology - considerations must be made about which software you will use, remote access to any server and any CPD to get up to date knowledge of what you are using. These things may be more tricky.

  • Working relationships may also be more tricky if you regularly work remotely. They may not thrive in the same way as when you see your colleagues/clients daily.
