Stress Relief for Busy People

It's not easy fitting in time for yourself in today's busy world where everything has to be done now, and by the time you've returned home from your day you're just too tired. Stress can easily overcome us. Here are some tips to help relieve stress, which are easy, quick and fuss free. You can do them anywhere, in your office, on your commute and at home before and after work. You'll be surprised by how much better they make you feel.

Positive attitude - We have all heard people say "think positively" or "look on the bright side" when we have had a set back. This seems like an impossible task at times. It is said that people that think more positively have an overall improved sense of well being. The good news is that you can learn to be more optimistic. Once you understand the way you think you can learn to change your "inner dialogue" and control the way you think. For example, after a set back, instead of blaming yourself, stop and think "actually, that was not my fault. I will try again" It is known that people who habitually practice this way of thinking are generally more successful.

Breathing exercises - I've been hearing a lot recently that deep breathing exercises help in your day to reduce stress and anxiety levels. What you do is sit comfortably, slowly inhale through your nose counting to 5 in your head, then let the air out from your mouth counting to 8 in your head. Repeat this several times and that's it! Easy peasy! It releases tension and can be used as a form of meditation.

Take a short walk - Even for just 2 or 3 minutes around the office, to get away from your desk and/or the source of stress. This helps to clear your mind. Even better, sit back down afterwards and do your breathing exercises and you'll be good to go!

Learn to say no - How much more time for yourself would you have if you were able to say no to one or two of your new commitments? I know you might just want to help but if this goes on for an extended period of time you will more than likely suffer from burnout - which will make you ultimately less healthy and less helpful. This again may take some thinking and some practice. If you would still like to help but can't do it for when they want, turn the no into a positive and say "I can't do this.. but I CAN...." and set your terms. If something doesn't fit in with your schedule don't feel guilty. Be firm, clear and remember no excuses are necessary. All you have to do is say that it does not fit in with your schedule. Learning to do this will reduce stress and give you time for what really matters.

Be organised - I like to be organised, the more organised I am, the less stressed I feel. I have a specific way of organising my workload, however, people find their own way of doing things. The first thing I do is make a list of all the tasks that have to be done for that day. Then I work out which ones are more urgent and complete them in that order, ticking them off as I go along. I also like to keep my work area tidy and free from clutter, just because I concentrate better in this way, which again, reduces the stress.
